Materials technology

Carbon nanotubes.
Made into heat.

Carbon nanotubes are part of a conductive coating sealed inside the film. Current flows across the whole coating, so the whole surface warms, not one wire.

Carbon nanotubes are tiny hollow structures made from carbon atoms. In this product, they are an ingredient in a conductive coating, rather than a loose mat of visible tubes.

The coating, edge conductors, grounding shield and PVC sealing have distinct roles.

At the smallest scale

Carbon, linked
into tubes.

A carbon nanotube is a sheet of carbon atoms rolled into a hollow tube. The film moves from the panel to an illustrative model of one tube.

Inside the panel

Know the parts.

The black heating coating, silver edge traces and grounding shield are different parts. Their appearance alone does not tell you their electrical role.

The parts of the heating film

  1. PVC sealing

Outer PVC layers enclose the panel.

  2. CNT-containing coating

The conductive coating is the heating layer.

  3. Edge conductors

Silver traces and copper conductors connect to the supply leads.

  4. Grounding shield

A separate shield has a grounding role; it is not the edge electrode.

Part roles are listed for identification. Construction follows the selected model.

Power and sensing.
Separate jobs.

Supply leads deliver power to the panel. A floor sensor provides temperature feedback to a local thermostat.

Programmable scheduling and any load-extension relay depend on the selected controls. Circuit capacity, connections and protection are established by the electrical design.
